Best way to water

by Jenny

I have just constructed a 10 by 10 slat house for my orchids. I want an automated watering system. I can do an overhead sprinkler, a mist or a drip system. I am too old and too busy to individually submerge them even though I know this is preferable.Suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Jenny,

I'd recommend the overhead sprinkler as the best way to water. Misters might also be helpful with cooling on hot days, depending what types of orchids you want to grow. One of the tricky aspects will be that all your plants get watered at the same time, so you'll have to choose potting mixes with different amounts of drainage/moisture retention to keep all your plants happy: for example you might use coarser bark in bigger pots. It'll take a while to get this figured out.

You could also get a watering wand and hook it up to a hose; that's a pretty quick, easy way to water lots of plants, and it gives you more control (for example, you could give a little extra to the smaller plants that will dry out more quickly).

It sounds like you're going to have lots of space for your orchids; enjoy filling it up!
