They came in a transparent pot with what did not look like soil, the pot looks far too small and what am i supposed to grow them in as far as soil is concern. Blessings Liz

Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytes , meaning they grow attached to the bark of trees in nature, not on the ground. So potting them in soil doesn't work, the roots need more air than that.

The most common potting mix for Phal s is sphagnum moss ( New Zealand sphagnum moss is the best). They are also commonly grown in bark chips or coconut husk chips, or sometimes mounted .

A lot of orchids like being "underpotted" compared to what you'd see for other plants -- and you'll very often see aerial roots growing up out of the pot. The main consideration in how large a pot to use is how quickly it dries out; big pots will often stay wet for too long, which can cause the roots to drown and die. It's best if the combination of pot and potting mix dries out in a week or less.

Phalaenopsis orchids should be watered just as the potting mix approaches dryness. Take the plant to a sink and run water through the pot, getting as much of the potting mix wet as you can. Water will run through the pot and come out the bottom. (Or if the drainage hole is relatively small, you can let the pot fill to the brim with water and then let it drain.)
