Leaves growing on stem

by Donna
(Alberta, Canada)

I have leaves and outside roots growing on the stem half way down. Have never seen this before. This particular orchid has flowered three times on the original stem then grew a new stem that flowered then died. What should I do with it??? I can't send a picture as am not using my own computer.

It sounds like your plant is growing a keiki! It will mature into a complete plant; this is a natural way orchids (and particularly Phalaenopsis) propagate themselves. When the roots are a few inches long, you can carefully cut it off and pot it up separately, or the longer you can leave it attached the faster it will reach blooming size. The aerial roots will appreciate some misting regularly, especially if you have low humidity, and getting them wet when you water the plant is helpful too.
